| Resumo | PIRATA (Pilot Research Moored Array in the tropical Atlantic) is a multinational observation network established to improve our knowledge and understanding of ocean-atmosphere variability in the tropical Atlantic. PIRATA is motivated by fundamental scientific issues and by societal needs for improved prediction of climate variability and its impact on the economies of West Africa, Northeastern Brazil, the West Indies and the United States. The PIRATA Program started in 1996 and in the past years has been augmented by a series of extensions to its original array. The PIRATA SW Extension, proposed and maintained by Brazil, is composed by three ATLAS Buoys off NE Brazil. The southernmost of these three buoys is located at around 19S, to the north of the high-precipitation region associated with the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). Recently, an addition to this array has been proposed by the Brazilian community. This will be accomplished by the construction in Brazil of a prototype of the ATLAS buoy, to be moored at 28S,42W. The data to be collected by this buoy will contribute to augment our knowledge on the role of ocean-atmosphere interactions and on the mixed layer heat contents in the region. The location of this buoy is in the region where the first known hurricane in the South Atlantic, the Catarina occurred in 2004. |
